Ottawa, Ontario - Transport Canada has issued its latest recalls, which may affect some General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai and BMW vehicles.

bmw_dt.jpg

2008 Buick Enclave
2007-2008 GMC Acadia
2007-2008 Saturn Outlook
Vehicles affected: 16,525
On certain vehicles in areas of moderate to heavy snowfall, a buildup of snow or ice on the windshield or wipers could restrict the movement of the wiper arm. The wiper linkage may become detached from the motor shaft, and the wipers will become inoperative. Dealers will install a new wiper crank arm, driver’s side link and crank arm nut.

2001-2006 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
2007-2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
2002-2006 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
2007 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
2003-2007 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class
Vehicles affected: 279
Certain vehicles equipped with Active Body Control have sensors on the front struts. Due to variations in the supplier’s soldering process, soldering points on the AZ-sensors boards may not be within tolerances, and signals from the affected sensors may not be accurately transmitted. A variation can result in an uneven front suspension. Dealers will inspect and replace the affected sensors.

2008 Hyundai Elantra
Vehicles affected: 8,498
On certain vehicles, the fuel pump motor may not have the proper and uniform electrical surface contact. This may cause the pump to produce less pressure than required to supply the fuel injection system, which could result in poor engine starting and performance. Dealers will replace the fuel pump sub-assembly.

2006 BMW 3 Series (Sport and standard seat)
2004-2006 BMW 5 Series (Sport, comfort and standard seat)
2006 BMW 6 Series
2004-2005 BMW 7 Series
2006 BMW X5
2004-2005 BMW Z4
Vehicles affected: 20,000
On certain vehicles, the front passenger seat occupant detection mat can fatigue during usage, depending on the seat configuration, vehicle geometry, and manner and frequency of the passenger’s entry and exit. Over time, micro-cracks could develop in the sides of the mat, which could lead to a break of the conductive path. The system will recognize a failure and the front passenger airbag will be deactivated. The airbag “On/Off” lamp will illuminate to make occupants aware of the deactivation. Affected models will receive an extended warranty of 10 years; under the extended warranty program, an occupant detection mat that experiences this specific issue will be replaced at no charge to the customer.

EU prepares to sue over Volkswagen law PDF Print E-mail

BRUSSELS–The European Commission is preparing to take Germany to court to force it to change a new law that would allow the state to block a takeover of Europe's biggest car maker Volkswagen, a European Union spokesman said Tuesday. 911 front left side.jpg

Internal market commissioner Charlie McCreevy will ask the EU's other 26 commissioners to support a legal challenge at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, his spokesman Oliver Drewes said. Drewes did not say when that decision would be taken.

The EU has long warned Germany to scrap a rule that gives Volkswagen's second-largest shareholder — its home state of Lower Saxony — the ability to block major decisions.

Germany was forced to redraft a nearly 50-year-old law that protects Volkswagen AG from a hostile takeover after an EU court ruled last year that it deters bidders and breaks European rules guaranteeing all EU companies the right to invest in any part of the 27-nation bloc.

German Justice Minister Brigitte Zypries says Germany is complying with that ruling particularly scrapping a provision that capped shareholders' voting rights at 20 per cent, whatever the size of their holding.

But it has insisted on keeping other provisions, notably one under which "significant decisions" require the approval of shareholders representing 80 per cent of Volkswagen's stock, plus one share, at the annual general meeting.

That would mean that a shareholder with 20 per cent of the stock would continue to hold a blocking minority. Lower Saxony holds just over 20 per cent, and state governor Christian Wulff has ruled out selling any of the stake.

Volkswagen's biggest shareholder — fellow German automaker Porsche, which has a 31 percent stake and has said it plans to raise that to a majority holding — opposes the government's plan.

It has called for the threshold for major decisions to be lowered to 75 per cent in keeping with standard German securities laws

JDPower.com on Audi RS4 PDF Print E-mail

What's New?
The convertible version of the A4, absent since it was redesigned in 2005, returns to the lineup in both regular A4 and high-performance S4 versions. And if the S4's 340-hp V-8 isn't enough, Audi is re-introducing the RS 4 sedan with a 420-hp V-8 and modified, high-performance suspension.

Overview
Few cars have done more for an automaker's reputation than the A4 has for Audi. First introduced in 1995, the A4 was remarkable for its small but powerful 1.8-liter turbocharged engine, optional all-wheel drive, and affordable price. The A4 was a sales success for Audi, and it put the brand back on the shopping lists of buyers looking for a serious performance marque.

The current version of the A4 made its debut in 2005. Engine choices include a turbocharged, 200-hp, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder as well as a 255-hp 3.2-liter V-6, both with FSI direct-fuel-injection technology. Both engines are offered with front- or quattro all-wheel drive (the wagon, known as the Avant, is available with quattro only). All versions (except the front-drive V-6) come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission; quattro-equipped cars offer a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic, while front-drive cars get a continuously variable transmission (CVT). For 2007, a soft-top convertible joins the sedan and wagon. Side air bags and electronic stability control are standard on all A4s.

The high-performance S4, now available in convertible, sedan, and wagon form, features a 340-hp (302 lb.-ft. of torque), 4.2-liter FSI V-8, a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, and quattro all-wheel drive. New this year is the RS 4 sedan, with a high-revving (8,250 RPM) version of the 4.2-liter V-8 that produces 420 hp and 317 lb.-ft. of torque. Power is delivered to all four wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission. Other RS 4 changes include a lowered and upgraded suspension, a mechanical Dynamic Ride Control system to reduce body movements, high-performance brakes, and unique body and interior styling.

The Competition
The Audi A4 competes in the Compact Premium Conventional segment, which consists of 15 models. Buyers in this segment look for performance, exterior styling, and quality, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM

The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM were the BMW 3 Series (120,180 units sold), Acura TL (71,348), and Infiniti G35 (60,741). The Audi A4 sold 49,862 units in 2006, an increase of 1.9 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Compact Premium Conventional segment include the Cadillac CTS, Lexus IS Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Acura TSX, and Volvo S40/V50.
